The suburb of Bayonet Head was was gazetted in 1981, and developed in the 1980s. The land was originally settled as a farming property, called Flinders Park. The suburb was apparently re-named for an early French bayonet dug up there during development (from 'Why “Two Peoples” Bay?' by David Giles)
Bayonet Head is bounded by Elizabeth Street to the north, Lower King Road to the west, Yakamia Creek to the south and Oyster Harbour to the east.
Plans have recently been made to develop the area between Bayonet Head and Lower King - which is currently progressing, and becoming the new Oyster Harbour estate.
At the 2011 census, 2,490 people lived within the suburb's boundaries - an increase from 2,304 in 2006, and 1,934 in 2001.
The suburb contains a primary school, called Flinders Park Primary (1978), with a student population of approximately 500.
